Movie: The Descent

  • May. 11th, 2009 at 1:14 PM

I had a chance to see this (well, most of it) the other night.  It was surprisingly good.  Basically, some friends go cave exploring, go too deep, and encounter the less-than-human natives.

Some quick thoughts/observations:

1) The hunting noise the creatures make sounds like that of the Predator.

2) Their enraged scream is close to Alien.

3) SPOILER: I hated that the second girl was in the car at the end.  That is so Hollywood.  I choose to think of this a hallucination brought on by the survivor's hysteria.

A good horror flick, which I look forward to seeing in its entirety at some point in the future.

It's funny yo say that -- because, in the original un-edited version of the film, that's precisely how it ends. A minute was cut from the movie for an American audience. Not surprisingly.

Saw the director's cut tonight from beginning to end. I like everything a lot more now!!

Yeah, I liked the movie a lot, especially for that ending. But now, apparently there's a direct-to-video sequel...

I just recently saw this movie as well.

I hated it.

I thought the characters were all idiots who deserved to die in horrific ways, though it really started falling apart for me when the creatures showed up. It would've been so much better if it had all been strife between the women while trying to get out of the cave. then again, that would've needed actual characterization and individuality for the women...

Of course, it may just be the fact that I like to do outdoorsy stuff, and occasionally go spelunking. I was royally pissed at how little they cared about what they were doing to the delicate cave environment.

I thought this movie was brilliant. A) the claustrophobic ambience B) sure the monsters were scary, but the consequences of accidentally putting a climbing axe into a friend's neck was sublime. Much worse than the monsters. Totally human and plausible.

I thought the ending was awesome . . . and now I've read the comments I understand why you might have disagreed.

Man, cutting the last five minutes? They *make* the movie. The version we got in Thailand must have been the uncut one (which isn't all that surprising,s eeing as how we don't actually have any rating system for violence. . . )

Doug, you MUST find some way to watch the original ending. Youtube sounds good. Then go back and read your entry, and you'll see why I said WTF? when reading it.
