Another New One

  • May. 5th, 2010 at 2:23 PM

So here's one I haven't seen before (obviously): Before me, Laura Cleveland handled the artwork with RoF.  She worked in offices down in VA.  I'm working up here in NY.  So I come across this art submission, and somehow, while the artist sent it to the NY address, s/he scribbled Laura's name as art director.  Not the most entertaining of new ones, but a new one nevertheless.

ETA: I emailed Laura, thinking she might be amused to learn this.  She wrote back, telling me that she's still receiving submissions to Science Fiction Age.  Science Fiction Age shut down about a decade ago!

Now there I'm not surprised about Science Fiction Age. Not in the slightest. There are two absolutes when it comes to submissions: far too many people read absolutely nothing about guidelines other than the mailing address, and even more never bother to check to see if the publication is still around. (Back when I was still writing for Tangent, the magazine got a writeup in Factsheet Five, with the notice at the bottom of the review reading "NO FICTION". Dave Truesdale was still inundated with fiction from people who thought that the restriction didn't apply to them.)

So at what point did the fictions submissions stop?

I honestly don't know. I know that the review ran in 1995, and they were still coming in by the middle of 1999, well over a year since the last print issue. For all I know, they're still coming in.

ba-Huh? Eerrr.... Am I the only one, or one of the few, that actually goes to the trouble of checking addresses and editor names before I submit?

Probably not. If it helps, you have a lot of others who depend upon their own lists, no matter how updated. I still get movie preview passes from local movie publicity companies addressed to "Sci-Fi Universe", even though (a) Sci-Fi Universe was shut down in 1999 and (b) I quit writing for skiffy magazines in 2002.

Well, I've never actually done a study to see how many people address me or Shawna in their cover letters by name as opposed to "Dear Editor," "Dear Editorial Staff," "To Whom It May Concern," etc. But I'd guess that more 50% address Shawna or myself by name. How much more? No clue!
