Nebulas!

  • May. 24th, 2011 at 12:33 PM

Yes, in Internet terms I'm about a billion years late in posting about this, but while the Nebulas are not technically a con, getting caught up afterward is EXACTLY like a con.  But.  Yes.  I attended the Nebulas from Friday-Sunday, and I'm still basking in RoF's win, this for "How Interesting:  A Tiny Man" by Harlan Ellison, co-winner (along with Kij Johnson for "Ponies") for Best Short Story.  I attended the Nebulas once before, back in 2006, when they were held in NYC.  That was the last time RoF was up for a Nebula, when "The Language of Moths" by Christopher Barzak was up for Best Novelette.  I was rooting for it, of course, and was disappointed to see it lose (it's a brilliant story), but with all due respect to Chris, even if it won, I don't think I'd have been quite as excited as I was this past Sunday.  Chris's story was nominated back in the days of rolling eligibility for the Nebulas, and Shawna actually accepted it for the magazine before I had joined RoF.  This time, I was there at the very beginning when we took the story ...and let's be honest, I'm more involved with the magazine now than I was back in 2006.  So to be there from beginning to end, and to be there live at the Nebulas was Harlan's story was announced as the co-winner was very gratifying indeed.

SFWA should also be commended for hosting an excellent weekend.  On the outside, everything seemed to flow like clockwork.  If there was chaos behind the scenes, they did an excellent job of hiding it.  I saw so many people this weekend (or met them in person for the first time) that I'm not going to even try listing them all, but if I saw you, you know who you are.  It was great talking to you, meeting you, and seeing you again.

As a quick side note, if you'd like to read Harlan's story, it's available in PDF form on the RoF website.  Look at the top of the website, and in the middle column, you'll see BUY DIGITAL COPIES.  Harlan's story is in the February 2010 issue.  PDFs of an individual issue cost $3.99.

Finally, in case anyone still hasn't seen the Nebula results, Locus Online provides a nice breakdown here.

Once again, great to see you, Doug!

And just so you know, you showed up quite a bit in my photo wrap-up of the con:
