Preliminary Nebula Ballot

  • Jan. 11th, 2008 at 4:11 PM

The Prelimanary Nebula Ballot has been  released.  Congrats to all the fine folks I know who have made it this far.  In the novelette category, I'll take a moment to single out Jim C. Hines for his Realms of Fantasy story, "Sister of the Hedge," & my friend, Andrea Kail, for "The Sun God at Dawn, Rising From a Lotus Blossom."  Andrea actually had this critiqued in our now defunct critique group, the 8th of February.  I could go on with other names, and it's really cool how many of you guys I've come to know, but I'll draw the line here.  Just know that if we know each other and you've made it I'm thrilled for you.

Good luck, guys!

Thanks! I really wish we could see a few more stories from Realms making the preliminary ballot. Right now, we're getting buried by those Asimov's and Analog and FSF folks!

I know, it sucks! The only thing I can do is make three SFWA sales, so if there any ROF stories I'd like to nominate, I can cast a vote. And after 13 years of consistent publishing I'd also like to see at least ONE Hugo nomination and more than one World Fantasy nomination ...

Do you know how Realms' circulation compares to the other big 'zines? My sense was that Realms had more readers, but not as many of the SFWA and Worldcon crowd. But I've got no hard evidence one way or another.

The last circulation numbers I saw were in Gardner's yearly summary for YEAR'S BEST ANTHO. He gave the the 2006 #'s for the other mags, but Realms lags behind for some reason, so for us the #'s were from 2005. According to his report, we now have a larger circulation than Asimov's & F&SF. Analog's circulation is still bigger than us, though not by much. I'm really curious to see what RoF's 2006 circulation numbers will look like, because I think our upgraded website (and yes, I know it still needs more upgrades) may have landed us a nice chunk of subscriptions.

All this said, I agree with your assessment that Realms doesn't have as many readers from the SFWA & Worldcon crowds as the other major magazines. I also don't have any hard data to support this, but it would certainly explain not having a single Hugo nominee on the final ballot, and having a limited # of Nebula nominees on the final ballot, 7 with just one 1 winner (hopefully you'll make 8 and 2 respectively). That one World Fantasy nomination needs a different excuse though ...
