World Fantasy Convention: Roommate Needed

  • Mar. 3rd, 2015 at 6:53 PM

UPDATE: Roommate acquired!

So I'm going to the World Fantasy Convention this November, which will be my first convention in a couple of years.  I'm pretty stoked, especially since WFC has always been my favorite con.  While it's close enough to drive up there and spare me the cost of a plane ticket, having your own room can still be a bit pricey.  So I'm searching for a potential roommate.  If anyone is interested, please message me at dougcohen2@gmail.com.

Upcoming Appearances

  • Oct. 5th, 2014 at 10:56 AM

On Monday, October 6th I'll be at the SFWA Reception in Manhattan.  On Saturday, October 11th I'll be at New York Comic Con in the Jacob Javits Center, also in Manhattan.  At 5:00 p.m. I'll be at the 47North booth, signing copies of Oz Reimagined.  Hope to see some of you at these events!

My Updated Lunacon Schedule

  • Mar. 15th, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Looks like the folks at Lunacon have updated the schedule.  I'm posting a link to the updated version, as I simply went back and edited the last post.  Hopefully this is the last time it undergoes any changes.

My Lunacon Schedule

  • Mar. 14th, 2013 at 4:24 PM

So it took until the day before the convention is scheduled to start (yes, you read that right), but I finally have my Lunacon schedule:

Nothing for me on Friday, but I'll be around all afternoon and into the evening.

Saturday @ 10:30-11:00 a.m. Author reading in Bartell: I haven't decided which story I'm going to read from yet.  Could be one of my forthcoming Weird Tales stories, could be my Alice in Wonderland/steampunk mashup in Fantastic Stories, it could be a WIP.  I might do something crazy like bring a selection and put it to the vote. Just to stir things up.  We'll see.  I have two days to decide.

Saturday @ 12:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Panel: Game of Thrones: TV vs. Books in Westchester Ballroom A2: Oh, you know I'll have something to say at this one!

Sunday @ 10:00-11:00 a.m. Panel: Memory of WOT in Westchester Ballroom A3: Apparently I'm moderating this one ...even though I didn't request it and don't want to ...I'm kind of stuck now though.  I've never moderated a panel in my life.  Should be interesting!

Sunday @ 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Autographing session in Westchester Assembly: I'll be happy to autograph your copies of Oz Reimagined, or anything that contains my shorter works.  I'll autograph stuff I'm not in too, but I'll also wonder what in the world you're thinking!

Sunday @ 2:00-3:00 p.m. Panel: Oz the Great American Fantasy in Westchester Ballroom A2: I'm sure I'll think of something to say ...somehow. ;)

If you see me at any point, please come say hi!  As long as I'm not rushing to a panel or a meeting, I'm happy to chat for a bit.

On Readercon

  • Jul. 30th, 2012 at 1:21 PM

No need for me to rehash what has been rehashed countless times already.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, Google "Readercon controversy."  That should do the trick.  Anyway, I haven't been there in two years, which has bummed me out the last two years, because it's always been one of my favorite cons.

Sigh.  There is a petition that is trying to address what happened.  I signed it.  You should sign it too.  I took no pleasure in signing it, because first of all, you wish that it had never come to this.  Also, signing it means not going to Readercon for the foreseeable future (assuming this mess isn't fixed.)  It's hard to cut ourselves off from things we like.  But attending Readercon now feels like condoning the Board's decision, not to mention future behavior of the kind that created this whole problem.  On top of this, when so many of my friends and acquaintances in the field no longer feel like this is a safe environment--people who in some cases I have known for years upon years--I can't in good conscience ignore that.

So no soup for me.  Come back one year?  I sure hope so, but we'll see how the Board responds ...

I'll be attending Lunacon for the day tomorrow.  I won't be on any panels or anything--I didn't know which day I'd be going until yesterday.  This used to be one of the cons I went to regularly, but it's now been a few years since my last visit.  I think the last time I went was the first year they moved it back to NY.  Anyway, I usually go to cons with my geek posse, but this year I'm flying solo.  I mean to hunt down Marvin Kaye and thank him in person for accepting my story for Weird Tales (a longtime literary dream of mine), but otherwise my schedule is 100% open.  So if you see me, come over and say hi.  I promise to do the same. :)

ROF: October 2011 Issue

  • Oct. 31st, 2011 at 1:44 PM

Last night I came home from the World Fantasy Convention (which was awesome, as always) to find that copies of the October 2011 issue of Realms of Fantasy had arrived while I was away. This issue is now also available for purchase as a PDF on our website.  I thought about maybe doing a write-up about WFC, but there is just too much territory to cover.  But on both a professional and personal level, I had an amazing time.  I highly recommend this convention to anyone who has never been there.  It's my favorite convention, by a wide margin.

World Con

I suppose I'll check on my LJ account while it's still working.  Who's going to World Con this year?
