Huge Thanks To ...

TLMorganfield, for first convincing me to use tagging on my LJ, and then volunteering her time and slogging through what is now 500+ entries and tagging them.  Thank you so much!  And if you find any older entries here that you enjoy, you have TL to thank for making it that much easier to find them.

A First For the Slush God ...

  • Jun. 25th, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Every so often I come across cover letters mistakenly addressed to the wrong editor.  The most common culprits are Gordon Van Gelder, Gardner Dozois, and Sheila Williams.  Well I've just come across a cover letter that is mistakenly addressed to the wrong assistant editor:

To Shawna McCarthy, John Joseph Adams, et al,

Congrats to JJA (aka the Slush God) for this milestone achievement! :)

the fact that my good friend John Joseph Adams is starting work on his latest reprint anthology, BRAVE NEW WORLDS.  This time the subject is dystopic sf.  As he did with his zombie anthology, he's put together a database where people can offer recommendations for stories he may want to read.  I admit to being a lightweight in this area and have already made my meager and hopefully helpful suggestions.  But maybe you can help.  Why not check it out for yourselves?  His WASTELANDS anthology--reprints of post-apocalyptic spec fic--was very well received, and people are eagerly anticipating his zombie reprint anthology.  I'm sure this one will be just as good!

Free Fiction Available

  • Feb. 1st, 2008 at 7:32 PM

My friend and editorial colleague, Edmund Schubert, asked me to help spread the word about some free fiction now available over at Intergalactic Medicine Show.  Since I'm posting the official announcement below, I think my answer to him is pretty obvious:

To Readers of Science Fiction and Fantasy everywhere,
When you have something great, you want everyone to know. So you tell people about it. You share it. You pass it along to friends everywhere. Well, that’s what we’re doing with InterGalactic Medicine Show. We want to make sure everyone has had a chance to check out what we’re doing, so we’re offering up a sampling of our stories – for free.
During the month of February we are going to make one story from each of our first four issues available at no charge. Two stories will be set free on February 1st, and two more on February 15th. Just visit www.intergalacticmedicineshow.com and explore the table of contents; the free stories will be clearly marked.
Issue one’s free story will be “Trill and The Beanstalk” by Edmund R. Schubert, issue two’s will be “Yazoo Queen” by Orson Scott Card (from his Alvin Maker series), issue three’s “Xoco’s Fire” by Oliver Dale, and issue four’s “Tabloid Reporter To The Stars” by Eric James Stone. Each story is fully illustrated by artists who were commissioned to create artwork to accompany that tale -- as is every story published in IGMS.
“Tabloid Reporter To The Stars” will also be featured in the upcoming InterGalactic Medicine Show anthology from Tor, which will be out this August (we wanted you to get a sneak peek of the anthology, too). However, the other three stories aren’t available anywhere except the online version of IGMS.
It’s really quite simple. Great stories. Custom illustrations. Free. We’re pleased with and proud of the magazine we’re publishing; now we’re passing it along to our friends and telling them about it. We hope you’ll enjoy it and do the same.
Edmund R. Schubert
Editor, Orson Scott Card’s InterGalactic Medicine Show

Arrr!

My friend John Joseph Adams, Assistant Editor over at the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, is scheduled to do a guest-editing spot with the magazine Shimmer. The theme for the issue is pirates (hence my subject header). Shimmer is an up-and-coming mag that is doing some wonderful things in the genre, and JJA is, well, he's the Slush God. They open to submissions tomorrow. If you have something that might fit this issue, you should consider submitting.

Tell Him Doug Sent You

  • Oct. 31st, 2006 at 10:53 PM

So today one of my best friends opened his own business . . .in the form of a comic store!  I spent a few hours there with some other members of our crew, hanging out and flipping through many a comic.  My friend is already in good with the neighboorhood kids, because in addition to giving out candy for Halloween he was also giving one free comic to every kid, featuring a story about whoever their favorite superhero was.  He also has a huge inventory of over two million comics, so he can pretty much get whatever you need.  Anyone reading this who happens to be a collector may want to check his place out.  Also, if you tell Jamel (my friend and owner of the store) that Doug sent you, anything you buy in the store is 5% off.

So to those of you who happen to live in the Long Island/NYC area, here are the details:

Barbara Campbell

  • Sep. 9th, 2006 at 7:29 PM

So back in 2000 I attended the Odyssey Fantasy & Science Fiction Writing Workshop. While I was there one of my best buds was a very talented writer by the name of Barbara Campbell. A few years ago she sold her first novel to DAW, this being HEARTWOOD. Last month she released the sequel, BLOODSTONE. And today she held a release party, which I was happy to attend. It was the first time I've seen her in about six years, so it was great catching up with her, and also gabbing with some fellow Odysseans.

Barbara (or Babsy, as I call her) and I were only able to talk so much, because she was playing the part of social butterfly, but the good news is we're both probably attending PhilCon this year. When I told her the first beer is on me, her answer was "More like the first night of beers!"

Gotta love Babsy.

Check out her books:

HEARTWOOD: http://www.amazon.com/Heartwood-Tricksters-Game-Barbara-Campbell/dp/0756402905/sr=8-3/qid=1157844755/ref=pd_bbs_3/104-7269773-1852715?ie=UTF8&s=books

BLOODSTONE: http://www.amazon.com/Bloodstone-Trickster-Game/dp/0756403553/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b/104-7269773-1852715?ie=UTF8

And I've learned from a reliable source that the text of Book 2 is not the piece of genericon displayed on the cover.

Enjoy!
