Stoker Convention 2006

So I got back today from the Stoker Convention. First time I went to this. Since it was down in NJ, I actually ended up crashing at the abode of John Joseph Adams, aka JJA, aka the Slush God. On Friday, I met up with him at the office to the wonderful magazine he works for, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. As one might expect in the office of an editor, books and slush were everywhere, in many piles, with piles growing out of the piles.

From here it was on to the convention itself. Friday was pretty lame, because there were minimal panels, and hardly anyone had shown up yet. The open bar softened the blow, but still. Saturday, though, was better. I hung out with much of my usual crew from the the monthly KGB sf readings, and made the acquaintance of several nice and talented authors, particularly F. Brett Cox. Also had a great conversation with Darrell Schweitzer, one of the editors over at Weird Tales.

Also, Chris Cevasco, the publisher/editor of Paradox was there, and he had copies of the latest issue with him. I've finally seen my name in print. Woo hoo! My review also sparked a thirty minute debate amongst my KGB crew in attendance(JJA, Chris, and the one and only Barbarienne), about its merits. So that was an interesting little result.

The food at the Award Banquet was surprisingly good. I had always assumed that hotels go out of their way to serve bad food, but this place proved the exception to the rule. Thomas Montelone was the Toastmaster this year, and he gave a very entertaining speech. As to the winners themselves:

Let me just say that the cover to SINEATER freaked me out.

Overall, this was kind of interesting to attend, but these banquets always go too long, and there weren't nearly as many people attending the convention as I had expected. The fact that it was Father's Day wt yeaeekend may have had something to do with this. Still, I think I'm going to take a pass on this one next year.

Realms Of Fantasy: August 2006

If you have comments about the stories in the latest issue, I want to hear them. This is the thread to speak your mind, with me and others. Also, just for the hell of it, I've started a poll, to see what the favorite story of the issue is. Have at it!
