Tower of the Hand: A Flight of Sorrows

  • Sep. 4th, 2012 at 2:33 PM

So as most of you know, I've been a massive fan of George R. R. Martin's epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, for quite some years now.  I've read the books multiple times, I blog about the HBO series in great detail, I've participated in roundtable discussions about the HBO series with some of George's biggest fans, and I was even a guest geek on The Geek's Guide to the Galaxy, wherein I discussed A Dance with Dragons with co-hosts John Joseph Adams & David Barr Kirtley.

Now I get take to my admiration to a new level.  The good folks at Tower of the Hand--some of the biggest fans of Westeros, Essos, and all related kingdoms--are releasing an e-book of essays dealing with George's brilliant creations.  And while I am not as visible in many of George's fan circles as these fine folks, I feel as though I have been inducted into the offical ranks of uber-fan, because a while back they reached out to me and asked me to contribute an essay to their e-book.

Ah, but what do I write about?  Well, as many of you also know, I'm a huge fan of the NFL ...just like a certain man with the initials of GRRM.  So for my contribution to this project, I have delivered my very own power rankings, NFL style, for the top players of that most nefarious of political activities, the Game of Thrones.  Further details regarding the particulars of my ranking metrics will be detailed in my "power essay."

Tower of the Hand: A Flight of Sorrows is scheduled for release on October 13th.  You can read the official press release here.

Will you also be betting, or at least ranking, trades?

I'll trade you Brienne for the Hound!

That's a tough decision. They both have benefits. I'll have to think about it. Meantime, what else do you have on the books?

If you're asking about Tower of the Hand: Flight of Sorrows, there isn't much I can tell you beyond the official press release. If you're asking about what else I'm up to beyond this essay, I have two stories pending in Weird Tales, I'm waiting to hear back from first readers re: my first novel (it's been almost a month, so I'm hoping critiques will start trickling in soon), and I'm *hoping* I'll be able to announce something else in the near future. Otherwise I'm working on the first of two sword & sorcery stories. I'm hoping one of them will prove a good fit for an anthology I was invited to (which I also can't discuss). That's about it at the moment!

No, I was asking about other trades, but this is all good news. I'm really glad for you. Congratulations.

Thanks. I am pleased with all of this, but at the same time I'm dissatisfied. I suspect the only way to cure that is do more! :)

So what are you waiting for? ;0)

Heh. Well for the first time ever I've been keeping a writing log to see how much I actually write over the course of a year. I started on January 1st. I already know there is room for improvement in terms of productivity, so maybe when I total everything up it will give me an additional and focused kick in the pants to do better in 2013.

Or do better in the rest of 2012. At least you have a hand on things and know what you need to do. Write more. Good luck.

That is some industrial strength coolness. Congrats, Doug!

Thanks, Matt. In retrospect, I should have asked if I could put off the announcement until today, i.e. the kickoff for the new NFL season. Oh well!
